Scientology Volunteer Ministers: Update from Haiti

More that 300 Volunteer Ministers groups in Haiti trained more that 20,000 in simple VM techniques and helped some 12,000 in the month of September 2011. We continue delivering seminars throughout the country.

Some of our recent activities include:

Twenty-four Volunteer Ministers groups in Bon Repos, Sarthe, Lilavois, Meillet and Cotard delivered seminars to more that 2,000 people.

A team of VMs arrived in Cap Haitian, met with local ministers and officials to find out what they need and want, and began Volunteer Minister delivery throughout that area. Working with the six groups in the area they provided 16 seminars to more than 500 people, and formed up another new 15 VM groups.

Another tour spent 10 days in Port de Paix in the north of the country. They worked with the more that 30 groups in the area, providing them with any help they needed to provide assistance in their areas, and they helped form up 15 new Volunteer Ministers groups. They delivered 12 seminars and trained nearly 500 people in VM technology.

One person who studied the Volunteer Ministers assist booklet said:

“I got many things from the Assists for Illness and Injuries booklet and I learned what to do to help somebody who is sick or in pain. Now I know that I cannot let somebody suffer, saying that I’m not a doctor, because I can use what I’ve learned from the assist booklet to him help him get relief. From now on, I have to do my best to help people in the streets and hospitals.”

Another, who studied the Integrity and Honesty booklet wrote:

“It showed me how important it is to respect the moral code…. These things give me another way of living my life and also make me a honest woman.”

A student who completed the Communication booklet wrote:

“This is the best book that I’ve ever read. It shows me how and why to communicate. It also shows me how important it is to listen to people and how important it is to have their attention. Thanks to L. Ron Hubbard for this great technology and also to supervisors who makes great efforts to share it to all the others.”

August 20—27, 2011, has been designated International Volunteer Ministers Week in honor of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers whose work has become synonymous with unconditional help.

What happened over the past 10 years

Over the past 10 years, since 9/11/01, the bright yellow t-shirts and tents of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers have become established symbols of hope in times of need.

While no one could have predicted the violence with which the events of 9/11 would rip our culture from its social veneer, Mr. David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center and ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion, saw clearly that it was time for Scientologists to redouble their efforts to aid Mankind in reversing society’s dwindling spiral that the cataclysm so suddenly and dramatically brought into focus.

A now legendary, internationally-issued Wake-Up Call inspired unprecedented response. On September 11, 2001 there were 6,000 Volunteer Ministers internationally. Today there are more than 350,000 trained in the technology and skills of Scientology Volunteer Ministers.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers program was born in 1976 when Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, noting a tremendous downturn in the level of ethics and morality in society, and a consequent increase in drugs and crime, wrote, “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a VOLUNTEER MINISTER and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”

Throughout the last 35 years, Scientology Volunteer Ministers have provided service in their communities and worldwide, volunteered in cavalcades and Goodwill Tours on five continents, and responded to 187 natural and manmade disasters including:

• Earthquakes in the United States, Japan, Greece, Peru, Chile, Russia, Italy, China, Turkey, El Salvador and Indonesia from 1995 to 2011, with major participation in the South Asian earthquake and tsunami of December 2004, the L’Aquila earthquake of 2009, the Haiti earthquake of 2010 and the Japan earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

• Yearly and seasonal hurricane, cyclone and typhoon relief throughout North and Central America and the Caribbean, Indonesia and Thailand. Some 900 volunteers aided victims of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Volunteer Ministers also routinely rescue people and property from floods throughout the U.S., Europe, Mexico, Pakistan and India.

• Crisis zones, including displaced persons camps in Chechnya 1997, the 1999 Moscow theater siege, Zimbabwe during civil unrest in 2000, Ground Zero in New York and the Pentagon after 9/11, London after the bombing of 2005, Mumbai in the wake of terrorist attacks in 2006.

• In Australian bush fires, Southern California brushfires and at the site of the massive 2009 fire on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa.

Working in the shelters in Northern Japan

Today the Scientology Volunteer Ministers were asked to expand their activities in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture (see below). With almost 6,000 reported dead and 6,675 people still missing

the region of Miyagi is leading the list of severely affected areas.

More than 200 additional Volunteer Ministers are preparing to leave for Japan to fulfill the demand for help. However more logistical support is needed and there are many more shelter where we can serve.

Trauma specialists provide stress relief in Christchurch

Along with medical staff and psychologists on the ground in Christchurch, trauma specialists have also arrived to provide stress relief.

Gary Bromwell of the Scientology International Disaster Relief Group is a trauma stress specialist who says he helps victims “come out of the trauma and back into the present so they can rebuild their lives and move on”.

Mr Bromwell uses a variety of techniques including massage.

When assembling model airplanes at age five, Lars Najbjerg was not just playing—he was preparing for his career.
Growing up in the shadow of the Soviet Union in the height of the Cold War, when he was 18 Najbjerg applied to train as a NATO fighter pilot.
“I knew there was more to being a good pilot that physical ability—there was a psychological factor as well,” he says. “Studying everything I could find on the subject, I read Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and I knew I had found something workable. The book changed my whole attitude.”
Of hundreds of applicants, Najbjerg was one of the five accepted. He completed NATO flight school training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas in 1986.
"I've always wanted to test myself—to push myself to the limit,” he says. “As a fighter pilot you learn early on it’s not the airplane that determines your success, it is how well you can cope mentally. Sure, it’s physically demanding to be subjected to pressure nine times stronger than gravity. But the psychological factors are even more important.”
Najbjerg progressed in Scientology, achieving the State of Clear in 1991—a state in which one no longer has his own reactive mind, the hidden source of irrational behavior, unreasonable fears, upsets and insecurities. He describes how the ability he gained made the difference.
"I was testing the spin characteristics of a two-seat aerobatic aircraft. Spinning is a maneuver where the plane is flown out of control, rotating in small circles towards the ground,” he says. “Suddenly, the engine stopped. Instead of reacting with sweaty palms and panic, I analyzed what went wrong and got the engine going. Then I tried the maneuver again. Once more the engine stopped. After several attempts I was able to adjust the engine to correct the problem. I would never have been calm enough to troubleshoot the engine, before I went Clear.”
While he views military defense against the threat of aggression as necessary, he believes that freedom depends on far more fundamental factors.
“War is a social insanity that grows out of ignorance and intolerance,” he says. “It is a terrible solution for lack of one that is more humane. The real challenge is to create a world where we can live together in peace.”
To that end, Najbjerg, 44, devotes his efforts to humanitarian volunteer work. He is chairman of the Humanitarian Association of Denmark, and an active supporter of the Say No To Drugs campaign.
Najbjerg, wife Lisbet, and their five-year-old son Noah live in the town of Them in the Silkeborg municipality on the Jutland peninsula in Denmark. Lisbet, a dentist, also holds a staff position at the Church of Scientology Mission of Silkeborg.

I'm willing to bet you know someone who's going through a rough time right now. Wouldn't you help them if you knew how? Or maybe you've been rebuffed so often in your attempts to help that you figure what's the point. But really, even when they say "no thanks" and even when they bite your head off for trying, they do want a hand. And if you do know how, you can save their life (or at least make it a whole lot better).

"Quiet Hero: Secrets from My Father's Past" by journalist Rita Cosby tells the story of her father's work as a teen on behalf of his Nazi-threatened homeland in Poland.

It also tells the story of the bond that was built between the father and daughter when she convinced him to tell the stories linked to the souvenirs of war she found among her mother's estate.

It almost didn't happen.

Cosby, an Emmy award-winning journalist, TV host and New York Times best-selling author, had been a near-stranger to her father after he abruptly announced one day when she was a teen that he was leaving the family.

She knew he had left Poland after World War II, and his body bore the statements of many scars, but he always had refused to answer questions about them.

Scientology Volunteer Minister tells of Haiti Disaster Response

Karen Farrell is a midwife and a Scientology Volunteer Minister who lives in New England. When she heard about the Haiti earthquake on January 12, her first thought was that she needed to help. Four days later she was in Port-au-Prince with the medical and disaster relief team of doctors and nurses from the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad, paramedics and Volunteer Ministers who boarded a flight in New York on January 16, chartered by the Church of Scientology to take medical personnel and supplies to Haiti.

Karen was assigned to General Hospital, where the facilities were woefully inadequate for the doctors and nurses working desperately to do something for the worst of the enormous numbers of earthquake victims. Overwhelmed with casualties, the medical staff could scarcely tend to women having babies.

The Norwegian Red Cross had set up a small makeshift obstetric and surgical unit and welcomed the midwife and doctors newly arrived from America.

Karen and a Haitian-American obstetrician from the Association of Haitian Physicians Abroad who arrived on the same flight set up a rudimentary labor and delivery room that Karen described as "archaic" and started moving women in.

After a 12-hour shift, exhausted obstetrics staff started leaving for the night. With no doctor on duty, Karen decided to stay. A fortunate decision. Karen delivered two babies that night.

The first baby was a girl whose mother named her "My Love." The second was born to a 16-year-old first-time mother. Alone, without her family or the father, the young mother was exhausted and terrified. "I held her in my arms for a long time, rocking her," said Karen. "After eight hours, we were finally able to move her to a room with power (yes, we were in the dark all that time). I had to show her how to push and get her to understand me." With the help of a translator, she told the woman, "Be strong and deliver this baby now!"

On another night, six women were in labor, two of them difficult cases. Karen could only hope their babies would hold off until the obstetrics staff came back on duty. Then, as morning dawned, another earthquake struck. Panic swept through the hospital. Some patients, forgetting their limbs had been amputated, tried to stand up and run out. Others who were far too sick to move struggled to get out of bed and out of the building.

"People were screaming and the whole building was shaking," said Karen. The labor room and all the obstetrics patients were in the basement, and Karen knew that if the building collapsed they would all be trapped.

She scrambled with medical students and military personnel to evacuate the patients from the basement and the wards, carrying them outside and placing them on the ground away from the unstable hospital building.

The move was too much for some. A young man died when his oxygen tank was disconnected so he could be moved. The nurse with him went into shock and was unable to function. Karen quickly applied her Volunteer Minister Disaster Response training that orients a person to their immediate surroundings, and the nurse soon snapped out of her shock and said, "OK, we have a lot of work to do," and got back to work moving patients to safety.

Amid the death and destruction, one of the pregnant women started giving birth. Haitian women near the mother-to-be began to sing. When the baby appeared, a doctor shouted, "A baby has been born! There is hope in the world."

Karen was still hoping the two difficult cases would hold off until an obstetrician came back on duty. Just as one woman was about to give birth, her labor slowed and the obstetrician arrived in time and delivered the baby by Caesarian section.

Karen also helped non-obstetrics patients. Many had no family because they were killed or separated in the earthquake, so Karen comforted them.

"Though I don't speak Creole, I could still sit with them and simply listen to them talk. I couldn't understand their words, but I wanted them to know they were not alone.

"One gentleman had so much fear in his eyes. I put my hand on his shoulder and in French I said 'calm.' I just wanted him to know that someone was there. He talked and talked and I nodded my head. I understood enough to know that he was in a lot of pain and was terrified. He thought he was dying, and he was. I got a cold cloth and wiped his face and the back of his neck.

"Everything was in disarray, including the area where the medicine was kept, and the doctors were spending their precious time picking though the medicine trying to find the one the man needed. I told them I would look for it so they could keep treating patients. I finally found it and they gave it to him and he recovered. He made it."

Karen returned home to Boston after a week, to go back to her job. In one week in Haiti she delivered six babies with her own hands and helped with another. She says the experience changed her, and she will never be the same.

12th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Humanitarian Awards Honor Outstanding Canadians

Toronto,Canada—The Church of Scientology of Canada recently hosted the 12th annual L. Ron Hubbard Humanitarian Awards honoring six exceptional Canadians for service to the community. More than two hundred guests attended including local and federal officials, police officers, and religious and community leaders. The awards were presented to:

Dr. Ken and Ms. Emily Ng, Chairman and President of the Federation of Chinese Canadians in Markham (FCCM), for providing services to those newly in the country and uniting the Asian community in cooperative social programs.

Ms. Melanie Dickson-Smith, Coordinator of the Church of Scientology’s Drug-Free Marshals program and Civilian Co-Chair of the Toronto Police Services 52 Division Community Police Liaison Committee, for 10 years of community service educating youth on the harmful effects of drugs.

Mr. Zul Kassamali, Vice President of the Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada and President of the Toronto Area Interfaith Council, for fighting intolerance and promoting better conditions for the elderly.

A Lifetime Achievement award was presented posthumously to Mr. Kamil Sadiq, Founder of the Canadian Federation of Intercultural Friendship. Ms. Shamim Sadiq accepted the award honoring her husband’s work to bridge ethnic, racial and religious differences. In 2002, Sadiq received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, awarded to Canadians for significant contribution to their fellow citizens.

Also receiving the L. Ron Hubbard Humanitarian Award for Lifetime Achievement was York Regional Police Chief Armand La Barge who began his career with York Regional Police in 1973 and has held the position of Chief of Police since December 2002. Crime rates have declined throughout his tenure as Police Chief and York Region has one of the lowest crime rates in North America. In accepting his award, La Barge said, “we have worked very hard to transform the concept of community policing in York Region from one of an officer walking the beat to one in which the community helps shape and assist police in delivering effective community safety, crime prevention and law enforcement programs.”

Scientology Volunteer Ministers Helping Haiti Orphans

Before the earthquake there were estimates of over 300,000 orphans in Haiti. There is no way to accurately estimate how many there are now, but it is a tremendous social problem.
The Scientology Volunteer Ministers visit orphanages, bringing food and supplies. Every VM who does so comes back with the same impression--the children of Haiti are amazing. Despite what they have been through they are so resilient, so open and so spiritual. They deserve all possible help.

21st Annual Say No To Drugs Holiday Classic Draws 55% More

The 21st Annual Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic 5K, 10K and Children's 1 mile fun-run drew an extensive crowd on December 19th, exceeding all expectations with the number of participants running to forward the message – including myself, a first time 5K runner.

I arrived early, the crisp morning air jolting me out of my weekend sleepiness. I knew the event would be popular, but I did not expect the sea of people assembled in front of the Harborview Center. According to an event coordinator's estimate, 1,700 runners participated this year, 600 more than in previous years – an increase of nearly 55%.

With a final turn-out of nearly twice the number that early-registration figures had suggested, it was understandable that I found myself among the few runners still receiving their numbers even as Hana Li Winters sang the Star Spangled Banner and a small army of runners waited for Lt. Dimmer of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office to blow the starting whistle. Event coordinators Chris Alexander and Sue Minkoff assure me that with this year's experience, they will be fully prepared to handle the enormous crowds next year – including the opportunity to pre-register and receive numbers the day before the race in addition to the morning of.

This being my first race, I paced myself along the course, from the starting line in Coachman Park to the steep incline of the Memorial Causeway leading to Clearwater Beach. Pushing myself up the arch of the Causeway was a challenge; it is no surprise that it features in many other races throughout the year, including both Ironman and Iron Girl. The course doubled back just after the bridge for the 5K runners, while the 10K continued out to the beach.

Participants represented all levels of the running scene: From the professional competitors leading the pack, to amateurs like myself who enjoy running for fun and fitness, to those who chose to walk the course, many coming out just to support the Say No to Drugs theme of the event. I found it to be an excellent race for a first-timer like myself, with a friendly and very supportive field. As the first of the 10K runners overtook some of us just rounding the bend on the 5K, words of encouragement met the athlete: “Finish it man! Finish it!”

Crossing the finish line, we were greeted with an all-you-can-eat breakfast of homemade organic spelt pancakes courtesy of volunteers led by Kitty Magness, and complimentary massages from Sun State Massage Academy and adjustments by Family Life Chiropractic – welcome rewards after the morning's exertion.

As the name implies, the Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic aims to raise awareness and spread a drug-free message. At the post-race breakfast in the Harborview Center, children pledged to live their lives drug-free and were sworn in as Drug-Free Marshals by the Youth for a Drug Free Florida, while runners viewed the DVD “The Truth About Drugs” or read the accompanying educational pamphlets.

Nathan Holden from Jacksonville and Melissa Todd from Kansas City won the men's and women's 10K, respectively. Daniel Geilman and Christa Benton of St. Petersburg took the men and women’s 5K races. Awards were also presented to top finishers in a range of age groups; including 90 year old Jane Bussman of Clearwater, in the 5K.

The Say No to Drugs Holiday Classic was started 21 years ago by world class runner and local resident Sandra Johnson, member of the Dianetics Athletics Association of the Church of Scientology. The idea was to promote an anti-drug message by raising awareness through a road race. From there it has become one of the premier races in the Tampa Bay area.

Scientology Volunteers Attack Drug Abuse in Sydney

Scientology youth attack drug abuse at 26th annual Glebe Street Fair.

Members of the Church of Scientology of Sydney, Australia, who belong to the Drug-Free Ambassadors were out in force Sunday, November 15, distributing thousands of fliers at the 26th annual Glebe Street Fair. Their purpose: to inform kids about drug abuse and the truth about drugs so they make informed decisions to stay drug free.

Concerned about a new drug called Mephedrone, or “MM-Cat,” that Sydney students and club goers buy over the Internet, the Drug-Free Ambassadors spent the day talking to kids and teens, swearing them in as Drug-Free Ambassadors. New Drug-Free Ambassadors take a pledge to be drug free and to help their family and friends do the same.

“The drug-free message is really important to get out in times like these,” said Drug-Free Ambassadors spokesperson Cyrus Brooks. “People are bombarded with bad news in the media and they look for escape, especially young people. Unfortunately there is a lot of false propaganda around that drugs and alcohol provide that escape. We need to attack these lies as it’s just not true.”

Brooks and his Drug-Free Ambassador team inform youth of the short-term effects of drugs such as Mephedrone and Ecstasy, which include paranoia and depression, and that users risk even more serious long-term effects such as kidney failure and cardiovascular collapse.

Cocaine, another popular “party drug,” has similar effects but can also cause tactile hallucination, with some kids talking about having the sensation of bugs burrowing into their skin. This drug can also cause reproductive damage and infertility. “Drugs like these ruin lives,” says Brooks. “The best solution is to not get caught in the drug trap in the first place.”

At the Glebe Street Fair the Drug-Free Ambassadors distributed a brochure explaining what drugs are, how they destroy creativity and why drugs don’t actually bring happiness, but quite the opposite. Dixon Restaurant in Chinatown and the Church of Scientology of Australia funded the printing of the brochure, which is being translated into Chinese and Korean to get the word out to Sydney’s Asian population too.

For Tom Cruise... Not Even the Sky is the Limit with Study Technology

Actor-producer Tom Cruise told the audience that Applied Scholastics holds the key to understanding and applying what one reads and studies. His goal as international ambassador for L. Ron Hubbard’s Study Technology: making it available to all who reach for it.

What better time to learn how to be a pilot than in preparation for ‘Top Gun,’” he told more than 2,500 educators and guests gathered at the opening of Applied Scholastics’ new international teacher training facility near Saint Louis. “So one day I went to have a lesson and after one day I gave it up — I couldn’t do it.”

There was just one problem, he admitted: he could not understand what he was reading in his training manual — and to make matters worse, a decade earlier he had been convinced of a label he found impossible to shake at the time. “I had been diagnosed with a false label — dyslexia,” he said. “With that I had been told I had a ‘learning disorder.’”

Thus, his immediate reaction to failure as a pilot student was, “’I’m dyslexic — damn!’ I’ve got to figure this out.”

He tried everything to unsnarl his study troubles — “different tutor groups, different speed reading courses, I hired people to come in and read with me.”

Then, the breakthrough:

“Shortly after that I discovered ‘the study technology,’” he said, referring to discoveries by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard that teach people, young or old, how to learn anything.

Today, the producer and star of The Last Samurai, says he hasn’t seen his learning difficulties since he began using Mr. Hubbard’s revolutionary study technology.

“Now, I am a licensed pilot — twin engine, instrument rated, which means I can fly through any weather by flight instrument alone; commercial rated, which means I can carry passengers as a profession if I so desire; and just for fun, I’m a highly trained aerobatic pilot.

“I am a film producer, I have my own film company, I own and run three companies and I continue to act in movies in addition to all that. And I learn every single day,” he stressed. “I use this technology each and every day in my life, at my work, with my children, in every area of life. Because of what study technology did for me, I started helping others.”

Mr. Cruise has done so as a founding board member of the Hollywood Education and Literacy Project (HELP), a highly-effective community-based learning program utilizing the study technology to open the doors of learning to thousands. This year, he was recognized by the National Mentoring Partnership with its Excellence in Mentoring Award.

The Scientology Volunteer Ministers web site took on a new dimension last year with free online courses anyone can do. The result is a virtual nexus, where people from all over the world learn simple tools developed by L. Ron Hubbard and use them to improve conditions in their own lives and those of their friends, families and their communities at large. I was so impressed with the story of this two year old child who called 911 when her mother collapsed in their home, I had to share it.

Two British men on board an airliner which crash-landed in Thailand were hailed as heroes last night for saving several of their fellow passengers by smashing their way out of the burning wreckage.

I think teachers today are heros. They are the lowest paid, hardest working professionals, and they have to deal with often stifling regulations, few resources and a total lack of effective educational technology.

The above is from the ScientologyToday.org announcement of the new Berlin Church, which seems to have everyone talking. Nasty politicians in Germany are pointing fingers at one another (especially the ones with their vested interests to protect) and the general public has just been pouring in to the building to find out what Scientology is all about. It has been at the top of Google.de news for the past 48 hours.

Now, that is where things get interesting — especially from a technical standpoint. There’s a curious problem that you get into when you’re trying to explain to someone what your religion is all about. You’re either very well versed in language, and can easily explain it in ways that someone can understand, and do this one-on-one, or you figure out a way to explain it much faster to more people.

Just try doing this for something like Shinto. What is it all about? You need to read a lot, and probably talk to some Shintos before you really grok it. Scientology is similar, in that you either have to talk to a Scientologist who’s in the know for some time, or just go in to this new Berlin organization.

Inside the organization are some of the niftiest displays and films that have been devised specifically to solve this problem. Explained at a Scientology event by Mr. David Miscavige — Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center, which is the holder of the Scientology & Dianetics trademarks — this organization includes panels that literally let anyone walk in, touch a screen, and then by themselves — with no input from others or person trying to explain anything — get a full explanation of the various facets and practices of Scientology.

I really respect firemen.

They put their lives at risk to save us and our property on a daily basis.

Even when not at risk they sure put themselves through hell.

About 16 years ago there were riots in LA and I remember how awful it was just having to be here with all the smoke and soot in the air. But these guys live through that ALL THE TIME!

So I have GREAT respect for anyone who is dedicated enough to make fire fighting their life's work.

I saw something this holiday season I never noticed before in LA.

Friends told me they'd seen it over the past couple of years, and that it was imported from the East Coast.

Road Blocks on LA streets to check if people were drinking. Not just people who looked like they were drinking, but everyone!

In one way I think this is a pathetic violation of privacy.

On the other hand, if it saves lives, isn't it worth it?

Dhaka: Mohammad Younus, banker to the poor and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner, returned to a hero's welcome in the Bangladesh capital yesterday after a visit to Norway to pick up the award.

Younus and the Grameen Bank he founded were cited for their work to lift millions out of poverty by giving loans to the desperately poor, especially women in rural Bangladesh.

The award, announced earlier in the year, was welcome news in the impoverished South Asian nation which gets regularly hit by nature's fury - droughts, cyclones and floods.

Younus left an airport reception perched on the back of a lorry and waved to the thousands of cheering well-wishers, television showed.

Younus and Grameen Bank representative Mosammat Taslima Begum received gold medals and diplomas from the Nobel Committee at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10.

The prize created by the Swedish philanthropist and inventor of dynamite Alfred Nobel comes with a cheque for 10 million Swedish crowns (Dh5.4 million), to be shared by the winners.

"We must work hard in all sectors including politics to keep up the image that we have created by achieving the Nobel Peace Prize," Younus told a news conference yesterday.

I loved this story on the Scientology Press Office about a local Boston humanitarian known as "Sidewalk Sam."

Sam was awarded the honor of "Human Rights Hero," by the Boston Chapter of Youth for Human Rights International, which is sponsored by the Church of Scientology of Boston.

When the Boston chapter of Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) had to chose someone to award as a human rights hero there was simply no competition. The only logical choice was the man who personifies "Freedom of Expression" — and that's "Sidewalk Sam."

Anna Politkovskaya Awarded the title World Press Freedom Hero

The Vienna based International Press Institute (IPI) posthumously awarded murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya the title World Press Freedom Hero. "Her murder is a shock and loss. IPI believes that she made a significant contribution to journalism and to the cause of human rights," IPI Director Johann Fritz said.

Politkovskaya, who was shot outside her Moscow apartment on October 7, was only one of over 20 journalists killed in Russia since 2000.

The investigative journalist wrote for the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, and was working on a story on torture in Chechnya when she was killed.

Fritz said Politkovskaya's nomination for the award was also a call on the Russian authorities to "ensure that there is a thorough investigation in her murder" in a country where, the IPI said, journalists were often killed with impunity.

IAS Freedom Medal Winners

I just saw this year's International Association of Scientologists event again. Seeing the work of the IAS medal winners I was so impressed by their dedication and their courage.

For example, the work of Sr. Garcia of Columbia who heads Criminon in that country and who personally brought tens of thousands of former insurgents and drug-lord militia members through the government amnesty by training them on basic Scientology principles and The Way to Happiness was really amazing to watch.

I also loved his acceptance speech, which he gave in Spanish and David Miscavige translated.

Sometimes when I’m walking down the street a passer by will say “love your work on Africa Bono, great cause.” Sometimes, they wish they hadn’t. I’m Irish, I love to talk to strangers. I love to talk about Africa. It can be hard to get away ... Each time it makes me think we need to do much more to get the message across that this is not a ‘cause,’ this pandemic that we and so many others are working on. 5,500 Africans dying a day of AIDS, a preventable, treatable disease is not a cause. 5,500 Africans dying each day is an emergency.

Enter Product (RED). Red is a new idea we’re launching to work alongside the growing ONE Campaign to Make Poverty History. Over the past year, almost 2 million Americans have joined ONE, in churches and chatrooms ... on soccer pitches and movie sets ... at NASCAR races and rock concerts. By 2008, we’re aiming to have 5 million members – that’s more than the National Rifle Association. Just think for a moment of what that kind of political firepower could achieve for the poorest of the poor...

Where ONE takes on the bigger, longer-term beast of changing policy and influencing government, (RED) is, I guess, about a more instant kind of gratification. If you buy a (RED) product from GAP, Motorola, Armani, Converse or Apple, they will give up to 50% of their profit to buy AIDS drugs for mothers and children in Africa. (RED) is the consumer battalion gathering in the shopping malls. You buy the jeans, phones, iPods, shoes, sunglasses, and someone - somebody’s mother, father, daughter or son - will live instead of dying in the poorest part of the world. It’s a different kind of fashion statement.

You might think (RED) sounds too simple. But AIDS is no longer a death sentence. Just two pills a day will bring someone who is at death’s door back to full health, back to a full life. Doctors call it ‘the Lazarus effect’. I’ve seen it myself and I have to say that it’s nothing short of a miracle. These pills are available at any corner drugstore. They cost less than a dollar a day, but the poorest people in Africa earn less than a dollar a day. They can’t afford them, and so they die. It’s unnecessary. It’s insane.

You might think it’s too difficult to get these drugs to the people who most need them. A couple of years ago when DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) lobbied President Bush, Tony Blair and Jacques Chirac to do more on AIDS we went to experts about this. From Bill and Melinda Gates, to Dr Paul Farmer working in the poorest places on the earth, to Dr Coutinho in his AIDS clinic in Uganda. Is it easy? No. Is it impossible? No. Can we do it? Absolutely. In 2001, there were 50,000 Africans taking ARVs. Now there are over one million people getting these life saving drugs thanks to President Bush’s AIDS initiative, and thanks to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

There are though still 4.3 million Africans without drugs, which is why 100% of (RED) money is going directly to the Global Fund to support the work they are doing. (RED) uses the power in your pocket to keep people alive. ONE uses the power of your voice to create a more just world where people can earn their own way out of poverty. This means tackling more than AIDS. It means fighting corruption. Insisting on good governance. Getting kids in school. Changing trade rules. Getting businesses to invest in Africa. Myself and Ali started a company called Edun – a fashion line that makes clothes in Africa – because so many Africans we met said what they wanted more than anything was a job.

All of this is ganging up on the same problem – the greatest health crisis in human history and the extreme poverty in which it thrives. The Number 1 question we get asked is, what can I do to help? I saw an example two nights ago.

I was coming home and I was with a group of my friends. As we turned the corner we hear the squeal of some brakes and a crash - a car had crashed sideways into another car and the car that was hit was in bad shape.

While one of the guys got on his cell phone to call 9-11 three others went to help the guy in the car, get him oriented and give him an assist till help could arrive.

They stayed with him until the paramedics arrived and by that time he was doing much better.

Scientologists get involved, they know they can help and the do so.

The two celeb humanitarians hit up Michigan Avenue in Chicago and zipped in and out of stores selling Product (RED) merchandise - an effort benefiting the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Apple, Gap, Motorola and Emporio Armani have joined the cause, which is backed by Bobby Shriver and the U2 frontman. "What's great about (RED) is I'm not asking you to give money or write a check or give to charity," says Bono, "I'm asking you to buy (RED) products and the companies who make those products will be making the checks, that's so cool."

The products, all of which are the color of the campaign name, include iPods, RazR phones and clothing.

Bono will appear on Oprah's talk show today to talk more about the U.S. launch of (RED).

Wangari Maathai is the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. As leader of the Green Belt Movement for nearly thirty years, she mobilized poor women to plant trees to counteract the deforestation occurring in her country. She has also campaigned for broader women's rights, education, family planning and nutrition.

Born in central Kenya in 1940, Maathai became the first woman from East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate. She founded the Green Belt Movement while head of the National Council of Women of Kenya. In 1988 she was severely beaten along with other members of the Green Belt Movement as the women attempted to plant trees in Karurua Forest on the outskirts of Nairobi. In 1992 riot police clubbed her and three other women unconscious in central Nairobi during a demonstration. She has been teargassed, threatened with death by anonymous callers, and jailed for leading protests. She has continued tirelessly, and today the Green Belt Movement in Kenya has planted more than 30 million trees.

We entrust them with the very lives and success of our children.

And many teachers are real humanitarians, who make all the difference in the lives of the children they care for.

My dad was a teacher, and wherever we went, anywhere in the world, this is the kind of thing that would happen. Walking down the street, or filing out of a concert, or standing in line for a sports event, some stranger would walk up to us and say "You probably don't recognize me, but you were my teacher in 1948 and it was because of you I decided to...." and from there he or she would tell us how he/she had become a doctor, lawyer, a success in sports, artist or, yes, a teacher like him.

I heard the coolest story the other day.

A friend of a friend, years ago, was driving down the Freeway in LA when he saw a very good looking well dressed Black woman who was pulled off on the side of the road, obviously in need of help.

He drove his car off onto the shoulder and ran back to where her car was parked, and found out she had a flat and didn't know how to change the tire (this was before cell phones so she couldn't just call for help).

He changed her flat and was about to take off when she insisted on knowing how to contact him -- she wanted to show her appreciation.

He told her he didn't need any acknowledgement -- he was just happy to have been able to help.

A few days later a big-screen color TV was delivered to his home. He couldn't figure out what this was about and told the delivery person that this was obviously the wrong address - he hadn't ordered a TV. But the man pulled out a letter and handed it to him.

It was the woman whom he had helped.

She thanked him again for being willing to stop and help her.

And the letter was signed "Mrs. Nat King Cole"!

Oprah talks of "Random Acts of Kindness." This first time I ever heard her say this I thought - what a great concept.

I don't know if this originated with Oprah or someone else - I just heard it first on Oprah.

But there is something even MORE special than such a kindness. And that is an EFFECTIVE random act of kindness.

How many times have you wanted to help someone? (What a loaded question!).

Have you ever had a friend who needed someone to listen to, or some moral support, and you were there, even though it was inconvenient and might even have cost you something else you really wanted, to be there and help them?

But did it really help? Were they back down in the dumps again over the same thing a short time later?

That's where effective comes in.

Somtime there are ordinary heroes

Sometimes the most ordinary people can be heroes. Like these people. Members of the Scientology-sponsored "Say No to Drugs - Say Yes to Life" campaign, they work to save kids from the ravages of drug addiction.

And I would venture to guess that the parents of any kid so saved would look on their work as being heroic indeed.

Nazanin Afshin-Jam, Former Miss World Canada 2003, was recently recognized as a "Human Rights Hero" for her work to save the life of an 18 year old Iranian girl.

The International Association of Scientologists presents a Human Rights Freedom Award to three outstanding people (or groups of people) each year. The event is held live in the UK toward the end of October and is televised the following week in Scientology churches around the world.

I had to put in this story from South Africa - A hero from a different view:

"Shark attack survivor Achmat Hassiem will be facing his demons on Sunday morning when he returns to the scene of the attack after being discharged from hospital on Saturday. The lifeguard lost his right foot last Sunday when he was attacked by a shark, believed to be a Great White, during a lifesaving exercise at Sunrise Beach in Muizenberg. He was given a hero's welcome by family and friends when he arrived at his Strandfontein home after spending five days in hospital. Walking into the house on crutches, Hassiem was all smiles and in high spirits as he embraced family and friends.

"Cracking jokes with his friends, he quipped to one of them: "Don't you have any takkies? I only need one."His grandmother, Sulayla Lackay, was among the first to greet him. She came from Durban when she heard the news.'I'm fine, Mama, I'm alive. It could have been much worse,' he told her.He proudly displayed the shark tooth extracted from his leg. 'He wanted to take part of me, so I took some of him," he joked holding up the segment of tooth.But he hasn't let his popularity go to his head and shies away from the term hero and said: 'I'm not a hero, just a lifeguard doing his job.' His father, Moegseen said he was glad to have his boy back at home. 'I called him last night and told him just one more night in hospital and then you can come home.' His father said Achmat's character was so strong that he wouldn't let this bring him down. "He is really warm and has an amazing personality. Even when they had him on the beach and were going to take him onto the helicopter he joked with the paramedics: 'Can I have a window seat?' That's the type of person he is.' Sitting in his room, Hassiem said he was looking forward to sleeping in his own bed again. He said the possibility of a shark attack was one of the things that lifeguards and surfers always joked and talked about. 'I just went and did it, though.' His brother, Taariq, said they had, in fact, been cracking jokes about sharks attacking them less than two minutes before the incident actually happened. Hassiem said he couldn't even describe the emotions he was feeling at that time. 'You are in the presence of the raw power of nature itself and it was something you can't explain. I am just glad to have gotten away with my life.' He is very excited about getting back into the water but in the same breath said it would probably be the scariest thing he will ever have to do. 'Arriving at the beach that almost took my life is quite hectic.' ..."

Real Heroes in Java

I am so impressed with the Scientology Volunteer Ministers who went to Java to help after the earthquake.

The most impressive part is they are still there!

That's almost 3 months. And we're not talking luxurious living conditions. They are living in huts and eating the local food, and working day in/day out.

Here's just one example of the kind of work they are doing:

Scientology Volunteer Ministers helping to teach kindergarden children simple Scientology assists to help them in their lives.

Scientology Volunteer Ministers in Indonesia are assisting in many ways and many places.

The International Volunteer Assist Team in Java has been training younger children on basic techniques of how to assist themselves and others. Showing them how to do very simple Assist techniques to relieve upset, panic, and anxiety even when brought on by the natural catastrophes which have occurred in their vicinity.

It's a very unfortunate fact of life that these islands have more than their share of catastrophes. To give these kids something they can use whenever disaster hits will serve them the rest of their lives.

Modern Day Heroes

Its funny when you think about heroes in the old days. Famous heroes were usually war heros, be they in a World War or fighting the Indians in America.

Today it doesn't seem that our heroes are as colorful or dramatic, but somehow I think over time, the early heroes had some help. Books, movies, TVs have made some of these people larger than life. Jessie James - a criminal is one such example.

Anyway, its an interesting look. Maybe in 100 years, the modern day heroes will have taken on a whole new look too.

I'd say the men and women in England who uncovered and stopped the plot to blow up international airlines yesterday are heroes. How many lives do you think they saved?

Be a Hero

I was just thinking - what really makes a hero? I realized it doesn't really require doing something super-human, that's what it takes to be a "super-hero."

I looked the work up.

In the 1828 Websters it is defined as "A man of distinguished valor, intrepidity or enterprise in danger; as a hero in arms."

In the 1913 Websters it is:"A man of distinguished valor or enterprise in danger, or fortitude in suffering; a prominent or central personage in any remarkable action or event; hence, a great or illustrious person."

Merriam-Webster defines it today as "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities; one that shows great courage."

These are qualities we admire. But how about being qualities we take on ourselves?

There's a Scientology course called the Personal Values and Integrity Course that anyone can study. Any Scientology church or mission has this course. You can even visit a Scientology Volunteer Ministers tent and get a copy of the booklet that's the text for the course, or read it online at the Scientology Handbook web site.

If you feel you could do with some polishing up of your person hero qualities, that's a great place to start.

Human Rights

I recently saw the public service announcements produced by the Church of Scientology International and Youth for Human Rights International.

These are an incredible weapon against intolerance and abuse.

What is incredible about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is how universal it really is. If these rights were actually enforced for every person on earth we would have no war or crime.

This fits so well with the Aims of Scientology (A civilization without insanity,without criminals and without war,where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights,and where man is free to rise to greater heights) that it's quite natural for people who embrace Scientology to also embrace human rights.

A few weeks ago, aboard the Freewinds motor vessel, David Miscavige, Chairman of the Board of Religious Technology Center (RTC) described the church's human rights campaign as an essential program in bringing about world peace.

Three of the PSAs can be viewed online at the Youth for Human Rights International web site or downloaded from I Tunes, and the remaining of the 30 PSAs will also be available online soon.

Pass the work on these PSAs to anyone you know. I really believe that the Internet is the most potent human rights weapon on earth and by using it to get these PSAs out we could create peace.
